The historic commission is advisory in nature and is usually given the following kinds of responsibilities:
- Implement the historic preservation plan
- Identify local historic resources that may be in jeopardy
- Solicit gifts grants and money as appropriate for purposes of the ordinance
- Maintain the local survey of historic resources and update as needed
- Recommend the preservation of districts and landmarks to Council
- Prepare information and disseminate publications on local historic resources
- Serve as a liaison between preservation organizations both at the local level and with state and federal agencies
- If directed by the Council, represent the community on preservation matters at the regional state and nation levels
