LEAF COLLECTION

All residents and businesses within the Borough of West Chester are required to recycle their leaves. Starting early November through the middle of December, the Public Works Department conducts a six (6) week collection program using leaf vacuum machines and street sweepers. During these six weeks, the areas north of Market Street are collected Mondays and Tuesdays. The areas south of Market Street are collected Wednesdays and Thursdays. Each neighborhood will have three collection weeks, as shown on the map and schedule on this website.

The leaf collection crews generally follow the 8 AM - 11 AM sweeper routes on those days as the absence of parked cars lets the collection move along swiftly. After 11 AM the crews then attend to the other streets in the area scheduled for collection that day. Residents are instructed to not pile up leaves for curbside collection until the last week of October; collection does not begin until November. Please be sure to finish placing piles out for collection by the Sunday before the final collection week. The Borough will not collect leaves after the final scheduled collection week in middle December.

Leaves are not to be placed out for trash collection because all leaves collected within the Borough of West Chester are composted. When you place leaves out for collection please be sure there are no tree branches, limbs or stones in the leaf piles, as those objects can damage leaf collection equipment. Garden debris, vines and small vegetative matter should be bundled or contained and placed out for trash collection rather than placed in the gutter for the street sweeper or leaf vacuums.

To dispose of leaves any time other than the scheduled collection season, bring your bagged leaves to the drop-off area at the Public Works Department at 205 Lacey Street. Please open the bags and dump the leaves into the pile and take all plastic bags home with you. This drop off is open to Borough of West Chester residents and businesses ONLY.

TREE LIMB COLLECTION/CHIPPING

  • 4th Friday of each month - Residences south of Miner St. and east of Church St.

Please place limbs in a neat pile on the street (no alley collections, please) as close to the curb as possible, where it will be accessible to the collection crew. Limbs should be no thicker than 4 inches in diameter, and the materials must be of a quantity which can safely be handled by two men within 15 minutes. CHRISTMAS TREES ARE COLLECTED THE FIRST TWO WEEKS AFTER NEW YEAR'S DAY.

The Borough cannot accept sticks smaller than four (4) feet in length (these can be placed out for trash collection if properly bundled), garden debris, vines or any small material which could be unsafe to handle in the chipper, or which could possibly damage the machinery. Whole trees and stumps are not part of the limb collection and chipping program and must be removed by a private contractor.

Light garden debris including grass clippings can be placed out for trash collection if properly contained.
