LEAF COLLECTION

All residents and businesses in West Chester are required to recycle their leaves. In the fall, generally late October through late December, leaves are collected curbside by the Public Works Department with leaf vacuum machines and street sweepers. On Monday and Tuesday pick-ups are made in the north end of town while Wednesday and Thursday pick-ups are made in the south end of town.

The leaf collection crews generally follow the 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. sweeper routes on those days as the absence of parked cars lets the operation proceed swiftly. After 11 a.m. the crews then attend to the other streets in the area where leaves have accumulated. On Friday, leaf collection continues throughout the entire town primarily concentrating on areas of heaviest accumulation.

Leaves are not to be placed out for trash collection because all leaves collected in West Chester are composted. When you place leaves out for collection please be sure there are no tree branches, limbs or stones in the leaf piles, as those objects can damage leaf collection equipment.

To dispose of leaves any time other than the scheduled collection season, bring your bagged leaves to the drop-off area at the Public Works Department at 205 Lacey Street. Please open the bags and dump the leaves into the pile and TAKE YOUR PLASTIC BAGS HOME WITH YOU.

Garden debris, vines and small vegetative matter should be bundled or contained and placed out for trash collection rather than placed in the gutter for the street sweeper or leaf vacuums.

TREE LIMB COLLECTION/CHIPPING

The Friday collection and chipping of tree limbs follows the route identical to that set up for trash and recycling collection.

  • 1st Friday of each month - Residences north of Gay St. and west of High St.
  • 2nd Friday of each month - Residences north of Miner St. and east of High St.
  • 3rd Friday of each month - Residences south of Gay St. and west of Church St.
  • 4th Friday of each month - Residences south of Miner St. and east of Church St.

Please place limbs in a neat pile on the street (no alley collections, please) as close to the curb as possible, where it will be accessible to the collection crew. Limbs should be no thicker than 4 inches in diameter, and the materials must be of a quantity which can safely be handled by two men within 15 minutes. CHRISTMAS TREES ARE COLLECTED THE FIRST TWO WEEKS AFTER NEW YEAR'S DAY.

The Borough cannot accept sticks smaller than four (4) feet in length (these can be placed out for trash collection if properly bundled), garden debris, vines or any small material which could be unsafe to handle in the chipper, or which could possibly damage the machinery. Whole trees and stumps are not part of the limb collection and chipping program and must be removed by a private contractor.

Light garden debris including grass clippings can be placed out for trash collection if properly contained.

Questions/comments should be directed to the Public Works Department at 610-696-5282.
